How do i get Internet explorer to recognize wireless networks in coffee shops.?

I bought a computer and i can't get internet explorer to work on wireless networks. The card will connect to the network but internet explorer will not work with it. I have tried all the wizards and stuff but they will not work. I do not have wireless at home and i just want to be able to connect to public wireless networks when they become available.

  1. Firstly what is your operation system?? Check to see if your getting an ip address, just cause your connection to the wireless network doesn mean ur getting an ip address. If its 2000 or XP open a command prompt and type ip config. Look for the ip address, it should be something like a 192.186.1.? Or if its windows 98 go to run and type winipcfg to show the ip info. If the ip starts with 169 then ur not getting an ip address and you wont be able to connect to anything
  2. It depends on what operating system your using. I don't know what computer you have. If your using a mac than the symbols up in your toolbar. If it were a windows than I think It's in the toolbar on the bottom of your screen. I'm a mac guy so I'm not exactly sure if that's right, but it's my best guess.
  3. The problem is probably that you're connecting to ad-hoc networks that don't have internet access. If the network you're connecting to is just another computer that has its wireless activated, you won't be able to access webpages. Before you connect to a wireless network that is appearing, make sure that it is listed as a "wireless network," either Security-enabled or Unsecured, and not a "Computer-to-Computer" network.
