  1. Interesting question. Is it stealing if they didn't secure the connection? Hmmmmm.....
  2. this is rarely enforced if ever because it's hard to track down the offender. but one person got arrested for parking in front of a coffee house and using their internet connection. i guess he looked suspicious in his car as if he was some kind of hacker. depends on your state but this man was in michigan. under michigan law, fradulent access to computers, computer systems, and computer networks is a law punishable by $10k fine and a 5 year felony. that is what the prosecutors used. he settled for $400 fine and 40 hours community service and the arrest did not go on his record.
  3. Unauthorized access to a computer, in the US, comes under the jurisdiction of Homeland Security, so the punishment could be anything from a few years at Club Fed to they forget that they sent you to Guantanamo. Local penalties for theft of service can range from a minor misdemeanor to a major felony. In other countries, who knows? the penalty for stealing a loaf of bread, in some countries, is to have your hand chopped off. Blasphemy, in some countries, is punishable by public flogging. The US constitutional guarantees don't apply all over the world. (And we have no idea where you live.) Best bet? Don't do it.
  4. Well based on a quick search, its just as illegal in Singapore as it is in the US, Canada, UK, etc. http://nofearsingapore.blogspot.com/2006/12/wi-fi-theft-any-punishment-for.html http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/comm-oddities/2007/01/probation_for_teen_accused_of.html So this particular case probation was given the offender. So yes it would appear to be illegal to steal internet in Singapore. Penalties can be - jailed up to three years and fined 10,000 Singapore dollars or $6,500 US. Add: Yes the owner can indeed track where you surf! (If he/she knows what they are doing. Even more they can actually trap packets meaning trap everything you send and receive! Not many do that, but since all your information goes through their router, they have control. They can even "redirect you". if they know how.
